What is a BRP?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)<\/strong> is a secure identity card issued by the UK Home Office. It contains biographical and biometric information<\/strong> about the holder and confirms your immigration status, right to study or work, and eligibility for public services or benefits in the UK.<\/p>\n

You do not need to apply separately<\/strong> for a BRP when applying for a visa; it is usually issued as part of the visa process.<\/p>\n

Who Receives a BRP?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You will generally get a BRP if you:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    Apply to come to the UK for longer than 6 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Extend your visa for more than 6 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Apply to settle<\/strong> in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Transfer your visa to a new passport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Apply for certain Home Office travel documents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Note: If you use the UK Immigration: ID Check app<\/strong>, you won\u2019t get a BRP, but a digital immigration status<\/strong> instead.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Information on a BRP<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    A BRP contains:<\/p>\n

      Your name, date of birth, and place of birth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Your biometric information<\/strong>: fingerprints and facial photo.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Your immigration status<\/strong> and any conditions of stay.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Whether you can access public funds<\/strong> like benefits and NHS services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Sometimes, a National Insurance (NI) number<\/strong> on the back (depending on visa type and issuance date).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      If there is no NI number on your BRP and you plan to work, claim benefits, apply for a student loan, or pay voluntary contributions, you must apply separately for one.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        Valid for the duration of your limited leave to remain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
